Iain Collie Architecture provided planning updates, a comprehensive technical drawing package and on-site assistance for the extension and refurbishment of this family home near Petersfield, within the South Downs National Park.

The project involved a series of substantial single-storey extensions, carefully composed to transform the relationship between the existing house, its new accommodation and the surrounding landscape. The proposals included the extension of the sitting room and the creation of a generous open-plan kitchen and dining space, alongside new living areas, boot room, utility space and games room.

A key principle of the design was the creation of strong linear connections through the new spaces. Carefully aligned openings establish long sight-lines across the rooms along the rear of the house, creating a sense of continuity and allowing the individual spaces to remain visually connected while retaining their own character and function.

The new façades were constructed in face brickwork selected to complement the original house, allowing the extensions to feel both contemporary and firmly rooted within the existing architecture. Deep window reveals give depth and rhythm to the elevations, creating an almost colonnaded character along the principal garden façade.

Crittall-style, metal-framed windows and doors provide a refined contrast to the solidity of the brickwork. Their slender profiles, combined with the depth of the openings, allow natural light to animate the interiors and create changing patterns of light and shadow throughout the day.

The wider scheme incorporates a new swimming pool and games room together with carefully considered landscaping, strengthening the relationship between the house and garden. Collectively, the extensions, pool, ancillary spaces and landscape form a cohesive architectural ensemble, bringing together material, light and landscape to create a distinctive and highly considered family home.
