Originally envisaged by Ian Adam-Smith and taken through the planning process by Optima, this extensive refurbishment and extension of a bungalow in the Surrey Hills was developed through a refinement of the technical design by Iain Collie Architecture, who also maintained an architectural presence on site throughout the construction phase, working closely with Knight Project Management to deliver this iconic dwelling.

The project involved a comprehensive reconfiguration of the existing house, with new extensions creating a generous open-plan kitchen and dining space together with an extended principal bedroom suite. The wider internal arrangement was reconsidered as a whole, establishing a more coherent sequence of spaces and strengthening connections between the principal rooms, the surrounding landscape and the exceptional long-distance views.

Externally, the existing bungalow was given a complete architectural transformation. Traditional projecting eaves were removed and replaced with crisp parapet lines, radically simplifying the building’s silhouette and establishing a strong horizontal emphasis across the elevations. Existing brickwork was unified with a painted finish, creating a restrained material palette and allowing the form and proportions of the architecture to take precedence.

Long, linear aluminium-framed windows reinforce the horizontal composition, introducing a precise and regimented rhythm across the façades. Carefully proportioned openings frame commanding views towards the South Downs while drawing natural light deep into the reconfigured interior.

The result is a striking reinvention of the original bungalow, characterised by clean lines, disciplined proportions and an ultra-minimalist architectural language. The refined material palette and strong horizontal geometry create a calm, contemporary home that responds confidently to its dramatic landscape setting.
