​Iain Collie Architecture produced the detailed technical drawing package and provided an on-site presence throughout the comprehensive refurbishment and extension of this detached family home.

The project involved a significant reworking of the existing building, with new ground-floor extensions and carefully considered internal alterations transforming the way the house is experienced.

 

A generous new porch and entrance hall forms the centrepiece of the plan, incorporating a striking three-storey stair atrium with floating timber staircase that creates a strong vertical connection through the heart of the home.

The existing roof was removed in its entirety and replaced with a new roof structure, providing additional bedroom and children's play accommodation in the upper level.

At ground floor, a large open-plan kitchen, dining and living space was formed with three distinct and considered aspects, bringing natural light deep into the plan and establishing a strong relationship with the surrounding gardens. Generous openings frame views out and provide a seamless connection between the principal family spaces and the landscape beyond.

The wider project extended to the refurbishment of the existing annex to create a dedicated guest suite, together with the transformation of an existing garage into a new gym space. These complementary interventions form part of a cohesive approach to the property as a whole, enhancing the way both the house and its ancillary spaces support contemporary family life.

The result is a cohesive and beautifully-detailed family home, where substantial architectural interventions have been carefully integrated with the existing building to create a series of light-filled, connected and highly functional spaces.
