Arts & Crafts House

East Horsley, Surrey · New Build Home

Iain Collie Architecture provided updated planning and comprehensive technical drawing packages for this substantial new-build family home, set within the distinctive chalk landscape of the Surrey countryside.

The architectural approach draws upon the principles of the Arts and Crafts tradition, combining carefully considered proportions, traditional forms and a rich palette of natural materials to create a dwelling that feels firmly rooted within its rural setting. The composition balances a strong architectural character with the warmth and craftsmanship associated with traditional Surrey vernacular buildings.

The house was constructed primarily using insulated concrete formwork (ICF), with posi-joist floor construction and timber-framed pitched roofs forming the principal structure. The technical design required careful coordination of these different construction methods, translating the architectural intent into a robust and buildable package while retaining the quality and character of the original design.

Externally, the elevations are articulated through a carefully composed palette of facing brickwork, natural flint and timber weatherboard cladding. The contrast in texture, tone and depth between these materials gives richness to the façades, breaking down the scale of the building and reinforcing its asymmetrical design.

The wider proposals included an in-ground swimming pool together with a dedicated bar and games room, extending the relationship between the house, its gardens and the surrounding landscape. Conceived as a low-profile contemporary addition, the bar and games room is defined by a flat roof incorporating an extensive green roof system. Viewed from the principal house, the planted roof becomes an extension of the landscape, softening the built form and enriching uninterrupted views across the surrounding countryside.

Traditional pitched roof forms, varied materials and considered architectural detailing establish a strong relationship between the house and its rural setting, while contemporary construction and carefully integrated ancillary spaces provide the performance and practicality expected of a modern family home.

The completed dwelling brings together traditional architectural influences, natural materials and contemporary construction techniques to create a characterful new home that responds confidently to the distinctive landscape and architectural traditions of the Surrey countryside.
