Wonersh Family Home
Wonersh, Surrey · Contemporary Extensions
This project involved the thoughtful extension and reconfiguration of a detached family home in Wonersh, Surrey, creating a series of light-filled contemporary living spaces with a strong connection to the garden.
The proposals included a two-storey rear extension and single-storey side extension, transforming the ground floor accommodation into a generous open-plan living and dining space, complemented by a contemporary galley kitchen, utility room and guest shower room. At first floor level, the extensions provided a new family bathroom and principal bedroom, enjoying elevated views out to the rear garden.
A defining architectural feature of the scheme is the fully glazed roof extending along the length of the kitchen, introducing an abundance of natural daylight deep into the heart of the home. This is complemented by a striking glazed enclosure to the rear elevation, creating a seamless visual connection between the internal living spaces and the landscaped garden beyond. Large glazed sliding doors further strengthen this relationship, allowing the living and dining areas to open directly onto the external, elevated terrace.
The architectural treatment combines crisp white render at ground floor level with natural cedar weatherboard cladding above, introducing warmth, texture and a contemporary character to the existing dwelling. Dark-framed glazing provides a refined contrast, while the carefully considered proportions and material palette ensure the new additions sit comfortably alongside the original house.
The completed scheme delivers a bright, open and welcoming family home, where natural light, carefully composed spaces and a close relationship with the garden are central to the architectural design.
